Facade Materials: Brick, Panels or Tiles — What to Choose for Your House

The facade is a house's first impression, but it isn't just about looks: the facade material protects the wall from moisture and frost, affects the insulation and decides how long the house stays beautiful without extra cost. In this article we compare the most common facade materials — brick, panels, tiles and decorative render.

Facade brick

Facing (facade) brick is a classic and very durable choice. It withstands the weather well, needs almost no maintenance and gives the house a solid, "heavy" look. In modern architecture brick is often used on part of the facade — combined with timber, concrete or render.

  • Pros: longevity, minimal maintenance, natural texture.
  • Keep in mind: it's a heavy material — the foundation and wall must allow for it; installation is relatively labour-intensive.

Facade panels

Facade panels — composite (aluminium), fibre-cement, HPL or timber-look — are the most modern and quickest-to-install solution. They are often built as a ventilated facade: an air gap and insulation stay between the panel and the wall, which keeps the wall dry.

  • Pros: lightweight, quick to install, a wide choice of colours and textures.
  • Keep in mind: always choose a fire-resistant, certified panel; quality and the sub-frame directly affect durability.

Facade tiles

Facade tiles — porcelain stoneware, natural or artificial stone — are a hard, moisture-resistant and almost maintenance-free material. Large-format porcelain suits minimalist architecture, while stone suits a natural, classic style. Tiles are also often installed on a ventilated system.

  • Pros: durability, cleanliness, a premium look.
  • Keep in mind: they need the right fixing system and precise detailing — especially around windows and corners.

Decorative render over insulation

Decorative render applied over insulation boards is the most economical and widespread solution. It gives a clean, modern surface and combines energy efficiency with an affordable price well. Render is often combined with timber or brick elements.

  • Pros: affordable price, good insulation, any colour.
  • Keep in mind: it may need repainting over time; light colours show city dust more.

How to choose a facade material

  • Budget: consider not only the material but also installation and future maintenance.
  • Climate and location: materials behave differently in the mountains, by the sea and in the city.
  • Style: the facade should fit the building's architecture and surroundings.
  • Energy efficiency: proper insulation and details cut heating costs for years.
  • Combination: often the best result comes from 2–3 materials together — for example render, brick and timber.

Facade design at Asymmetry

When designing a facade, we first create a photorealistic 3D visualisation where you compare several material and colour options, then prepare working drawings and details for precise execution. We work on new houses as well as on renovating existing facades.
