A geodetic survey is the precise measurement of a plot and the objects on it — including the terrain, boundaries, structures and utilities. The result is a topographic survey drawing that the architect and structural engineer base the project on.
With modern equipment (a total station and GPS), the survey reaches centimetre accuracy. Accurate baseline data rules out many costly mistakes at the design and construction stages.
If the initial survey is inaccurate, the error carries through the whole project — the building sits wrongly on the plot, the connections to utilities don't line up, and problems arise at the boundaries. That's why geodesy is the invisible but fundamental basis of a project.
